Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound

Medical ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging technique based on echolocation. The pulses of ultrasound are sent into tissues. The sound echoes off the tissues. The echoes are recorded and displayed as a sectional image. The image shows an actual size and condition of an organ.

We carry out ultrasound examination of:

  • Liver, gall bladder;
  • Pancreas;
  • Kidneys and spleen;
  • Urinary bladder;
  • Uterus and uterine appendages
  • Thyroid;
  • Submandibular and parotid salivary glands.

Medical ultrasound is commonly used to detect calculi, abnormal developments, cysts and tumors. However, ultrasound examinations are not effective in detecting inflammatory diseases, unless such diseases cause visible structural changes.

Indications for ultrasound examinations:

  • cholelithiasis;
  • chronic diffuse liver diseases;
  • liver tumors and cysts;
  • chronic pancreatitis;
  • pancreatic tumors and cysts;
  • hematological disorders;
  • tumors, cysts and traumas of the spleen;
  • kidney stone disease;
  • tumors, cysts, congenital defects of the kidneys and urinary bladder;
  • tumors, cysts and diffuse changes of the thyroid;
  • tumors and tumor-like masses of the uterus and uterine appendages.

How to prepare for an ultrasound examination?

Avoid eating gas-producing foods (milk, vegetables, fruits, brown bread and sweets) and laxative pills for 2-3 days before the ultrasound examination of the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen or kidneys

Take 1 g of carbolene (activated charcoal) 3 times a day or ½ of glass of a dill seed tea after meals (place 1 tablespoon of dill seeds to a cup, add 200 ml of boiling water and brew) for 2-3 days before the ultrasound examination.

Take 1-2 pills of enzyme preparations (festal, panzynorm, etc.) 3 times a day, if you have flatulence.

Avoid eating and drinking for 10-12 hours before the ultrasound examination.

Drink extra 1.5-2 liters of liquid 2-3 hours before the ultrasound examination of the prostate, uterus and uterine appendages and avoid urination.

You do not need to prepare for the ultrasound examination of the thyroid, submandibular and parotid salivary glands.
