The specialists of the department provide a specialized medical care to the patients with thoracic diseases, both citizens of the Republic of Belarus and foreign citizens.
The first lung transplantation in Belarus was performed at the thoracic department.
The core activity of the department is hi-tech transplantation surgery.
The surgeons carry out lung-conserving surgery (with resection) and reconstruct lung vessels and bronchus. The first autotransplantation of a lung lobe in the CIS and the first sublobar autotransplantation in Europe were performed at the thoracic department of the 9th City Clinical Hospital.
The staff of the department took trainings at the world best clinics, i.e. at AKH (Wien, Austria), MHH (Hannover, Germany), Churchill Hospital (Oxford, UK) and Rabin Medical Center (Petakh Tikva, Israel).
The surgeons are experienced in mediastinal lymph node dissection. The risks and prevention of postoperative complications is always thoroughly assessed.
The prevention of the insufficiency of a bronchial stump and suture of tracheobronchial anastamosis in case of pneumonectomy is a routine procedure.
There is the ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine in the department.
We offer staying in the enhanced comfort wards.
The citizens of the Republic of Belarus are treated free of charge. To undergo treatment at the department, a patient shall provide a referral from an outpatient clinic or any other inpatient facility.

The types of surgery carried out at the thoracic department:
- lung transplantation;
- lung segmentectomy, atypical pulmonary resection;
- upper, middle and lower pulmonary lobectomy;
- upper, middle and lower pulmonary lobectomy with a sleeve or wedge resection of the bronchus and(or) pulmonary artery;
- pneumonectomy;
- sleeve resection of the trachea;
- combined pulmonary resection or pneumonectomy with the resection of the descending thoracic aorta and replacement;
- combined pulmonary resection or pneumonectomy with the resection of the superior vena cava (marginal, fenestrated or sleeve resection and replacement);
- combined pulmonary resection or pneumonectomy with the resection of the right or the left atrium (if necessary, CPB may be used);
- combined pulmonary resection with the resection of the chest wall, including for Pancoast cancer;
- pneumonectomy with a wedge or sleeve resection of the bifurcation of the trachea;
- video-assisted thoracoscopy, biopsy of masses of pleura/lung/intrathoracic lymph nodes;
- simultaneous surgery for the respiratory organs, heart or main arteries in patients having a comorbid cardiovascular pathology and a respiratory disease;
- lung volume reduction surgery in patients with bullous lung disease with underlying COPD;
- biopsy of a mediastinal tumor;
- removal of a mediastinal tumor;
- removal of a mediastinal tumor with the resection of the respiratory tract, main vessels (superior vena cava, bracheocephalic veins, arch and branches of the aorta);
- endoscopic recanalization of the respiratory tract;
- endoscopic removal of benign respiratory tract tumors;
- endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy in patients with palmar or axillary hyperhidrosis.
