Cytogenetic

Cytogenetic tests are carried out by the specialists of the Republican Center of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation in cooperation with the specialists of the leukemia pathophysiology laboratory of the Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. 90 to 110 patients of the center of hematology annually undergo cytogenetic tests.

Cytogenetic tests help:

to diagnose a disease and its stage;
to determine a risk group (for patients with leukemia);
to decide on treatment and to assess its efficacy;
to make prognosis for a disease;
to monitor the efficacy of acceptance of allogeneic bone marrow after transplantation (hematopoietic chimerism).

We confirmed that type t (8;21) for M2 AML and inv (16) for AML M4 chromosome abnormalities have relatively favourbale prognosis. No chromosome abnormalities for any leukemia were found in the middle-risk group, except for t(15;17) for AML M3.

Chromosome abnormalities are often associated with morphological, immunophenotypic and clinical signs of a disease, that is why it is important to detect the abnormalities with a view to stating a correct diagnosis, determining a stage and risk group of a disease and assessing the efficacy of therapy and prognosis.
